Disciplines
- Dances registered in a certain discipline will be judged by a qualified jury based on fulfillment of criteria appropriate to that discipline, and will be judged in comparison to other dances entered in that discipline.
- The decisive factor in determining the correct discipline, is the predominant style of the dance. If there is no definision, the routine should be under "Open".
- It's up to the decision of the recent judges, to change routines to another discipline regarding to their conviction.
CLASSICAL BALLET:
Pure classical Technique, in soft shoes or pointe shoes, original choreography is allowed. Pointe shoes are allowed from 10 years up. For exceptions please check the ESDU office ahead the competition.
LYRICAL / CONTEMPORARY:
Modern Dance (Graham, Limon, Horton, Cunningham, Chladek...) Contemporary Dance and Neo-Classical, Lyrical Jazz.
JAZZ: Jazz technique, different jazz styles (Broadway jazz, Latin Jazz...)
HIP HOP:
Pertaining to the hip-hop category, we must place consideration to different East- and West Coast Styles, like: Bounce, Shake (Harlem Style), Hype, Funkystyles (Locking, Popping, Boogaloo, Waving, Floating, Tutting, Ticking, Snaking, Air Posing, Sleepy Style....), Newstyle, Krumpin, Dynamic Dance Styles (Uprock, Toprock, Downrock), Freezes, Foot- and Floorwork. We enforce the essential need to maintain a special style, vocabulary and elements of the hip-hop culture. Take care of your costumes (no tight sexy clothing...). Acrobatic movements are allowed but dancing elements and accents have to dominate.
FREESTYLE / BREAKDANCE (B-BOYING)
Power moves like: Windmill, Headspin, Flare, Airtwist, 1990's............are necessary, but dancing elements of this style (Uprock, Toprock, Downrock) as well as Foot - Floorwork components and several Airfreezes will be scored. Flexibility, variety and individuality should be the most impressiv part of the
performance. Acrobatic is allowed, but not necessary.
ACRO DANCE/STREET STYLES
Trend dance styles, electric boogie, video clip, with acrobatics, street dance, dance floor...acrobatics are requested, important is the predominant inclusion of dance elements. Power moves are required.
TAP: Tap technique, different step styles, Irish Dance. No taps can be heard on the music track.
OPEN:
All techniques not included in the previously mentioned , or a combination of different styles.
SONG AND DANCE: 50% dancing, 50% singing at the same time, not only one after another! Live singing and dancing, all dance styles are allowed. Three hand microphones will be available, at least one microphone must be used, live singing must be easily heard. Only background vocals may be heard on the CD!
MUSICAL:
No live singing, Music from a musical/dance movie/show, the musical character must be recognizable, but has not to stay original.
PRODUCTION NUMBER: The theme and the "STORYLINE" must be recognizable. All dance styles are allowed as well as life singing and talking. Only for Groups and Formations (9-30 dancers).
CHARACTER DANCE/ ETHNIC DANCE:
Original choreography is allowed but not necessary. The original Character has to be preserved. Original movements have to prevail. The costumes have to be adapted to the original. The music could be original or stylized.
VOCAL : Cordless handheld microphones will be available.
Judging Categories: appropriate song and lyrics for age and talent, correct vocal range, pitch and tone quality, diction, enunciation and elocution, voice projection, strong self image, body movements, stage presence, handling of microphone, breath control and over all entertainment value. (Original music is always encouraged for all styles when possible.)
Possible are: country/ethnic, pop/rock, jazz/musical, opera, rap, open.
